Spondylitis
Spondylitis is a term that broadly refers to inflammation of the spine. There are different types of spondylitis, each with its unique characteristics. Here are descriptions of two common types:
Ankylosing Spondylitis:
- Description: Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects the spine. It causes inflammation in the joints between the vertebrae, leading to pain and stiffness.
- Progression: Over time, the inflammation can cause the vertebrae to fuse together, resulting in a loss of flexibility and mobility in the spine. Fusion may also affect the sacroiliac joints connecting the spine to the pelvis.
- Symptoms: Common symptoms include lower back pain, stiffness, and difficulty with movements, especially in the morning or after periods of inactivity. Ankylosing spondylitis can also involve other joints and organs.
Spondyloarthritis (SpA):
- Description: Spondyloarthritis is a group of inflammatory rheumatic diseases that primarily affect the spine, although other joints and tissues can be involved.
- Types: There are various subtypes of spondyloarthritis, including ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, reactive arthritis, and enteropathic arthritis associated with inflammatory bowel diseases.
- Symptoms: Symptoms may include back pain, stiffness, joint swelling, and, in some cases, extra-articular manifestations affecting the eyes, skin, or gastrointestinal system.
